His Name Was Not Known
Record of Deaths in the Town of Surry (New Hampshire), 1829-1869.
This record of deaths over the course of 40 years in a single town is a sobering look at life in the 19th century. Recorded chronologically, each entry includes the date, name of the deceased (or, often times, only names the parents as many of the deceased were infants), and occasionally the cause of death. Among the many ailments listed are dysentery, consumption, cancer, fever, croup, and small pox. Some deaths were mysterious – “A man was found drowned in the mill pond, his name was not known.”
