Those Darned Typos
North Conway Academy. Portland, Maine: David Tucker, 1860.
The Society holds many examples of corrected broadsides, often with paste-overs or notes by the printer scribbled in the margins. This announcement for a new school term contains an error that is hard to fathom. The text of the entire sheet revolves around the start of school in September, with notes about costs, rules, and dates. Somehow, the printer set the third line as “Spring Term.” The beautiful types and the elaborate border design may have distracted him.
