Cookbooks and recipes are always popular additions to AAS’s collection, especially handwritten recipes. While most recipes are strictly consumable dishes (cakes, poultry, puddings, etc.), there are also many recipes for items such as medicines, household cleaners and dyes, and spirits. This recipe, handwritten on a scrap of paper, is for bitters. The recipe details a list of spices and herbs including barks, rhubarb, ginseng, orange peel, snakeroot, and Columbia root. All of these ingredients are then to be added to “3 qts Spirits or Brandy.”
