Alaskan “Indian Boys’ Press”
Catholic Prayers & Hymns in the Tinneh Language with Tinneh Indian Catechism of Christian Doctrine. Kosoreffski, Alaska: Indian Boys' Press, Holy Cross Mission, 1897.
Picture three native Alaskan boys -- about 14 years old -- named Nicholia, Ivan, and Aleck gathered around the printing press. Together they have learned to set up, print, and bind in limp black floral cloth the two Tinneh language religious imprints issued together here. The boys included a printed note on the verso of each title page explaining the two special types used to represent letters unique to the Tinneh language. This particular copy is especially valuable to scholars as it also contains many manuscript corrections and emendations to the text.
