Little Nellie’s Little Paper
Penfield Extra (New York). May 24, 1862, vol. 1, no. 21.
This is one of the most famous of the nineteenth-century amateur newspapers. Published between 1862 and 1866 on a weekly basis, Nellie Williams put out this paper using her brother’s workshop (he had gone off to war and was subsequently killed in battle). At one time she boasted of a thousand subscribers. This is the earliest issue in our collection.
