The Lincolns were a prominent Worcester family, with family members serving in Congress, as Governor of Massachusetts, and even as Librarian here at AAS. The Lincoln Family Papers already at the Society highlight the lives of these family members, one of whom, Captain George Lincoln (1816-1847), fought in the Mexican-American War and was killed at the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847. The author of one of the newly acquired letters writes “A week ago last Thursday was the day on which the remains of Capt. George Lincoln the son of Governor Lincoln of our town was buried and it was one which will undoubtedly long be remembered by all who witnessed it.” The letter goes on to describe a procession attended by the military, citizens and firemen, and excellent music by the band.
