Distribution of Slaves
“Division of Morgan Estate,” 1782.
An addition to our Slavery in the US Collection is this single sheet document from Richmond, Virginia detailing the division of the “Morgan Estate.” The estate was to be sold, with the profits being divided among different parties. The slaves were not to be sold, but rather divided among several people. The executors “valued the negroes belonging to the sd. Estate & according to our valuation amounts to £205, and have divided them as followeth…” It goes on to break down the value of each slave, all around £10-$£20. Although not an easy document to read, it is an important addition to our collection.
