Codfish for Christmas
Unidentified Account Book, 1865-1871.
The forty pages of this leather-covered volume are completely filled. The top of the first page titles the account “Family Expenses” and begins on April 3, 1865. Daily entries show typical households needs such as coffee, dried apples, kerosene, soap, and crackers, with some interesting entries intermingled. The family bought almanacs in January of 1870; and also celebrated with codfish for Christmas and oysters for New Year’s Day.”
